grease monkey

ask any mechanical engineer how difficult it is to replace your own brake pads and rotors and they'll say it's as easy as cake. ask a software engineer? quite the contrary.
i've been slowly learning more about my car. off the bat i knew this 2004 .:R32 was kick ass (240hp, AWD, 6-cylinder naturally aspirated) but every time i learn something new about molly i build a deeper appreciation for her, and that includes maintenance.
i've got the oil changes down, replaced the haldex oil and filter once but brakes was nothing i dared to try. that is, until i got an estimate from a trusty mechanic shop. i've seen brake pads replaced before but could i really change the pads and rotors myself? it's like doing heart surgery on a patient without finishing medical school. i didn't feel ready.
the hardest obstacle for me when starting car maintenance is the arm strength it requires. having a breaker bar is effective (majority of the time) but there are times when i'm just stuck. i'm so afraid of being in a position where i won't be able to complete the job because i couldn't untighten a bolt or whatever. so for this job, i had a man friend with me to play the part of my teacher and doubled as my backup arms. please note, i have upped my arm workout since.
when the job was complete, molly had new mintex brake pads and OEM rotors installed. i could NOT believe how easy it was to do. i felt like i was ready to teach a brake changing class! car maintenance seems so intimidating and complex but really, everything's so logical. it's so crazy how the unknown can be so scary.
up next: rear sway bar (a birthday gift), another haldex oil change, clay bar and wax

indecent proposal
fingerprints of a bum in a wheelchair that grabbed my window and said "let me get some. pull over and let me get some". molly was molested!

HID products announced!
today was a big release for HID. our team released three new products and we're so proud! the "magic mouse", bluetooth keyboard and a new IR remote.it started with AppleTV and IR. before i knew it, i became the IR guru in the group so naturally, i was given the IR remote project to own and lead to completion. let me just say this...what was supposed to be a quick, simple, no brainer project turned out to be the complete opposite. this was another solo project of mine and because of the unexpected struggles, i am that much more proud of this project going out. i know the remote isn't something to "oooh" and "awww" about but technically, it was a big firmware and software challenge and i'm stoked it's done!
we were obviously extremely excited to release the "magic mouse". it was a loooong development effort but the merge of a standalone input device with multitouch capabilities (aside from the iphone) is just incredible. momentum scroll, i love you! on a side note, who's the marketing genius that came up with "magic mouse"?!
as far as the other released products go, we helped in testing the new imacs and the new macbooks with the multitouch trackpads. i think the macbooks are the best bang for your buck at this point. once you go multitouch trackpad, you never go back.

birthday weekend
my birthday weekend started off on friday night with a snowleopard party at the california academy of sciences. the jellyfish were my favorite.
the next day, after changing my oil without ANY supervision (thank you very much), we celebrated by watching dark knight at dolores park.

though i'm always encouraging sharpie use, i fell in love with these cups! GENIUS!

sunday was filled with a heavy brunch, homemade cupcakes and pho. i look forward to installing my new rear sway bar, using my new timbuk2 cooler bag, making some easy crock pot meals and enjoying a new ringtone.
i'm excited for this year, 29 has definitely started off on the right foot.

DANGER: low tire pressure
so, my left rear tire was low but i didn't make the time to fill it up until about a week after i noticed it. as i was pumping it with air, i started hear a crackling sound and actually noticed the tire starting to bulge out. long story short, the low tire pressure caused more heat which caused the side walls to separate from the steel belts, etc...blah, blah...basically it caused the tire to fall apart on the inside. i'm lucky the tire didn't explode or fall off en route. and since i just bought these tires, they gave me their "dumb ass" discount. apparently this happens all the time.
